Calls to our service company for dryers failing to dry clothes is common. In many cases there is a true problem with the dryer but in many cases the problem is not with the dryer. The two most common causes for long dry times (not due to a fault of the dryer) or not drying at all is usually a clogged vent or incorrect power supply. Some customers have actually purchased a new dryer only to find out the new dryer did not solve the problem. Before calling for service or buying new follow these steps. 1. Turn your dryer on and check the air flow at the exhaust vent hood usually located on the side or back of the house. If the air flow is limited but the dryer actually gets warm inside then then restricted air flow may be your problem. To verify that the restriction is not in the dryer, such as a clogged blower houing, remove the vent from the back of the dryer and test air flow there. NOTE: Some exhausts runs exit through the roof making testing at the exit unsafe if not impossible for the do it your selfer. If air flow is good but the dryer is not getting warm then try the next step. 2. Most dryers operate on 220 volts. Although it only takes 110 volis to actually run the dryer motor you need 220 volts to operate the heating element. Just because your dryer is running does not mean it actually has 220 volts to the unit. Find the breaker labeled dryer in your homes power panel. Reset the breaker by turning off and back on. In some cases the dryer will start heating again. If the breaker has to be reset again in the near future then have a qualified professional replace the breaker as they can become weak over time. If everything in both steps check ok then you can feel comfortable that you will not be wasting your money calling for service on your unit. Unless trained or otherwise qualified do not attempt to check voltage readings or make repairs. If you wish to do a little detective work on your dryer be sure and remove all power from the unit.
